10ENGSPO - Core English: The Culture of Sport
Course Description
Overview
In this module, we will explore issues of the past and present that impact on the culture of today’s sporting world. We will focus on a range of fiction and non-fiction stories based on a range of social sporting situations in national and international contexts, including the individual and the team in different sporting codes.
First Half Year
In the first half year module, we will explore sporting stories from Aotearoa and around the world and investigate how the media plays a role in presenting these issues to society, focusing on viewpoints, use of language, bias and fact vs. opinion.
Second Half Year
In the second half year module, we will share our own and other stories, learn interviewing skills and demonstrate these skills through writing an authentic biography or autobiography. We will also use our understanding to create advertisements, a sports commentary and develop important communication skills.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
A personal laptop is strongly encouraged for all class learning and assessment work.
