10ENGWHA

10ENGWHA - Core English: Whakapapa - Exploring our histories

Course Description

Overview

Our histories and stories have been told, expressed and recorded in many ways throughout history, whether it be through written work, films, art, music or through oral storytelling and speech. This module focuses on the exploration of pūrākau (stories) about origins and identities both in Aotearoa and the wider world.

First Half Year

In the first half year, we will explore how and why stories have been told, expressed and recorded. We will study ancient Māori pūrākau, Greek myths, rock carvings, haka performances and letters written across the world to explore the ways in which people have chosen to tell their stories. We will question whose stories have been recorded throughout time (and whose have not) and investigate how bias can be seen in different texts. Using art, music, poetry, and literature as inspiration, we will look at the deeper truth of how whakapapa (genealogy/ ancestors) informs identity and place.

Second Half Year

In the second half year module, we will use a range of fiction and non-fiction writing styles to delve into the themes of whakapapa, identity, place, belonging, whānau, love, and conflict in relationships. Students will also learn how to create written, visual and spoken stories that express identity and personal histories, as well as how to format stories for an audience.

A personal laptop is strongly encouraged for all class learning and assessment work.
