9SOC - Year 9 Social Studies

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr G. Cheyne, Ms A. King, Miss E. Lowry.

Social Studies explores how societies function and how individuals participate as active, informed, and responsible citizens. You'll examine issues in Aotearoa New Zealand, the Pacific, and beyond, considering the past, present, and future.

The year covers various topics, including:

  • Understanding your own turangawaewae and cultural identity, as well as those of others.
  • Learning about the impact of European migration on different groups and Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • Studying environmental sustainability and e-waste, leading to a social action project and reflection.
  • Exploring different cultures and leadership approaches and their influence on modern life.
  • Developing research skills through inquiries into international and domestic conflicts like World War I, comparing these wars to domestic conflicts, such as the Northern Wars, Parihaka and Wairau.

Social Studies is collaborative and relevant, preparing future leaders by addressing societal issues across time.
