10ENGWHA - Core English: Whakapapa - Exploring our histories

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Miss T. Harvey.

Overview

Our histories and stories have been told, expressed and recorded in many ways throughout history, whether it be in written forms, films, art, music or through oral storytelling and speech.

In this module, you will explore how pūrākau about our origins and stories about our identities help us to understand ourselves and others. You will study a range of texts from both Aotearoa and the wider world to build your understanding and skills.

First Half Year

In the first half year, you will explore how and why stories of identity have been told, expressed and recorded. Your study will focus on origin stories, including local stories and pūrākau, myths from other parts of the world, and historical texts to explore the ways in which people have chosen to tell their stories.

You will explore how creators of texts use features of language to craft and communicate their stories, and how perspective and bias can be seen in different texts. Using art, music, poetry, history, and literature as inspiration, you will look at the deeper truth of how whakapapa contributes to the substance of identity and belonging.

Second Half Year

In the second half year module, you will use a range of fiction and non-fiction writing styles to delve into the themes of whakapapa, identity, place, belonging, whānau, love, and conflict in relationships. You will also learn how to create written, visual and spoken stories that express identity and personal histories, as well as how to craft stories for specific audiences.
