10ENGWOR - Core English: Worlds and Journeys

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Miss T. Harvey.

Overview

In this module, you will delve into the worlds of stories by exploring pūrākau, fiction and non-fiction stories from Aotearoa and around the world. You will explore how stories are created and crafted to build worlds and construct journeys that entertain, empower and challenge audiences. You will explore how stories have changed over time, how values are represented, and how the bias and perspective of the storyteller shapes the story.  You will then look at what Aotearoa and the wider world might look like in the future and the journey we will take to get there.

First Half Year

In the first half year module, you will focus on pūrākau and stories about exploration and discovery, quests and journeys, and how features of those stories evolved into modern fantasy and science-fiction genres. You will develop reading and analysis skills by learning about how language, structure and narrative features are used by writers, and how perspective and bias can influence how a story is created.

Second Half Year

In the second half year module, you will create your own stories by exploring the art of fiction and non-fiction storytelling using your personal voice and perspective. You will develop your writing skills in a range of texts types and for a range of purposes. In your stories you can create alternate pasts or imagine what New Zealand and the wider world might look like in the future.
