Course Description Recommended Prior Learning

A love of drama and performance.  


Level 1 Drama is an exciting course based on creating, performing and responding to live theatre.

Students will develop acting skills, creative skills, textual analysis and critical analysis.

Students are expected to perform as part of this course and, where possible, to attend live theatre performances to extend their learning.



Course Overview

Term 1
Theatre Aotearoa: explore scripts and live performances created in New Zealand and how they aim to entertain, educate, heal or transform society.

Term 2
Devising Drama: students create their own drama in small groups, using drama elements and conventions to investigate an issue and express their ideas to an invited audience.

Term 3
Level 1 Production: students apply their skills to a class production of a scripted play or extracts from scripts, challenging students to develop their acting skills and celebrate their work with a performance to an invited audience.

Term 4
Portfolio collection: students will ensure that all assessment criteria have been met and all work has been submitted.

Assessment Information

Assessments are mostly practical with some theory work to be submitted either in writing or as a spoken presentation.

This courses develops communication and critical thinking skills useful to many careers including teaching, performing, journalism, law, and any avenues of work that involve interaction with customers or service users.
