1EHU - Level 1 English: What makes us human?
1EHU Course DescriptionThe ideas of what makes us human and what gives us our identities have been explored through stories across time. Our identities are created and enhanced through the stories we experience and share.
You will explore texts and contexts that express, affirm and challenge our personal and collective understandings of whakapapa, identity, and heritage. To do this you will develop your skills of analysing texts through Whakapapa (background), Orokohanga (origin), Mana (auhtority), Māramatanga (content), and Aronga (lens).
Your learning in this course will be based around how pūrākau express the human experience and are shaped to inform, empower, entertain, and challenge. Through studying a variety of written, oral and visual texts, you will learn to analyse how our cultural, religious, philosophical and social beliefs contribute to our understandings of ourselves and others.
You will create a portfolio of fiction and/or non-fiction writing that focuses on the expression and exploration of identity.
Please note:
In 2024, we are offering several different options of English to try to cater to student interests. These courses will only run if sufficient numbers of students select them. For this reason, you will need to choose a back up English course in case your selected course does not run.
