3ENG
Course Description Recommended Prior Learning

Students need to have achieved at least one external English standard at Level 2, as well as the writing portfolio to be entered in this course.

However, students who do not meet these requirements can discuss this with the Head of English if they would like to be considered for this course.

This course is focused on the place of the New Zealand voice, including the voice of Māori, in the tradition of world literature. Learning will focus on a range of aspects, ideas and perspectives, including mātauranga Māori and aspects connected to te ao Māori. They will critically analyse features of visual, written and/or oral texts, make connections between texts and contexts, and develop the effective communication of their analysis in formal written responses. Students will develop and craft creative and formal writing through a range of authentic writing contexts.

Students need to be interested in the study of English, be strong readers and writers, and have good critical thinking and time-management skills to succeed in this course.

This course also prepares students for the Scholarship English exam for those who wish to enter this.
