Course Description Recommended Prior Learning

Level 2 Te Reo Māori or competency at the required level.


Students will develop speaking skills so that they can discuss their ideas and opinions. They will read authentic materials and write expressively for a range of purposes.


Course Overview

Term 1
Whaktaki i te kaupapa- Introduction to the standards involved.
In-depth mihimihi and pepeha study, this will be an ongoing study and learning throughout the year.
Written essays on chosen topics. Topics to choose from are: A myth or legend(own choice), Maori Religion and beliefs, and Kingitanga.

Term 2
Students will use the learning and information from their written essays to prepare TWO speeches about their TWO chosen kaupapa.
Work will begin towards completing Mahi Whakarongo- Listening comprehension and understanding.

Term 3
Students will have an opportunity to successfully complete their prepared speeches and their Mahi Whakarongo.
Intentional study and preparation towards the External exams: Pānui and Tuhi.

Term 4
Students will complete their Mahi Whakarongo and continue to prepare for their external exams

Assessment Information

There is an opportunity to attain UE within this subject.
There is a selection of Internal and External standards within this learning area.
Students are able to attain Literacy within this course.
