Course Overview

Term 1
Inmigración (Immigration)
This term, you’ll explore the powerful stories of people who move between countries — their challenges, their reasons for leaving, and the contributions they make to new communities. You’ll learn to express your own opinions clearly, and you’ll practise how to respectfully support or challenge other people’s points of view. We’ll use real-world examples from Spain and Latin America, and build your vocabulary to talk about identity, integration, and human rights.

Term 2
The Hispanic World – Art, Film, Music, and Festivals
Get ready to dive into the creative and colourful world of Hispanic culture! You’ll explore iconic artists like Picasso and Frida Kahlo, watch thought-provoking films (perhaps something from Guillermo del Toro or Pedro Almodóvar), and discover festivals like La Tomatina or Día de los Muertos. This is your chance to learn how art and tradition reflect the values and history of the Spanish-speaking world — while expanding your vocabulary and cultural knowledge.

Term 3
El ocio (Leisure and Free Time)
How do people spend their free time around the world? This term, you’ll look at how leisure shapes wellbeing, social life, and even identity. From sports and travel to music and online hobbies, you’ll compare how leisure looks in New Zealand vs Spanish-speaking countries. We’ll also talk about whether leisure is a right or a luxury — and you’ll get to debate, justify opinions, and reflect on your own habits.

Term 4
Youth and Identity
To finish the year, we’ll focus on you — and people like you. You’ll explore what shapes identity: culture, language, values, friendships, family, and social expectations. You’ll compare youth experiences in different cultures, discuss social pressure, and share your views on what it means to grow up in today’s world. This topic encourages personal reflection, respectful debate, and sophisticated language use.
