Course Description Recommended Prior Learning

15 Level 1 credits achieved in one Social Science course or English.


We explore a range of natural and cultural environments, including global and urban studies, geographic skills including research and ICT analysis and positive actions for nature, culture and people.

Students gain transferable skills in

  • Field trips and methods for collection of information outside the class
  • Teamwork and independent thinking
  • A holistic worldview
  • Analytical skills, including cultural, statistical and geo-spatial analysis including Google Earth and ArcGIS
  • Practical application of concepts including environment, sustainability, patterns and perspectives 
  • Ability to design and carry out research projects
  • Ability to communicate visually, verbally and in writing
  • Synthesise different viewpoints and types of information.

Term 1
Viewing and Doing - An introduction to your world, including….
Geographic research and local sustainable actions

Term 2
Cities, Spaces and Changing Places - Urban studies and spatial analysis
You choose a range of cities and analyse patterns.
Studies have included CSI Chicago - reducing crime in Chicago and Wellington, the coolest little capital in the world

Term 3
Global Studies - Patterns, Processes and People around the world
You have a choice of global studies, topics have included global rain forests and the spread of hip hop music

Term 4
Review - this short term is spent preparing for success in NCEA examinations
