University Entrance
← HomeThis is the minimum requirement for entry to university, or for degree and some diploma courses at polytechnics.
To qualify for University Entrance through NCEA students need to achieve the following:
- NCEA Level 3
- Three subjects at Level 3 or above, made up of:14 credits each, in three approved subjects
- Literacy – 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of: 5 credits in reading AND 5 credits in writing
- NB: Students not taking 2A English will need to achieve this through their other subjects; careful subject selection is therefore vital.
In the subject information pages, credits marked R count for reading, W count for writing and B count for both.
- Numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of:
- Achievement standards – specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or
- Unit standards – package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627 – all three required)
- Approved subjects can be found in the student section of the NCEA website under the University Entrance heading.
- Most universities are now ranking students for entry based on Level 3 achievement standards from approved subjects and require a Preferential Entry Score. It is vital that students check the website of the university they wish to attend to ensure that they understand their specific entry criteria.
- Each university may have additional requirements for entry to specific courses. It is advisable to see the Careers Advisor or contact the University directly to check requirements.
- University Entrance for international students may differ and students are therefore advised to check requirements directly with the university to which they are applying.
